1. SO, MIND EXPANSION HAS JUST RELEASED YOUR FIRST SOLO ALBUM "KIND OF HAZY". WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE RECORD?
I think it's really dreamy. I love the pedal steel. Joe Kennedy is amazing. To me the songs are daydream meditations, little film soundtracks.
2. WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE FOR "KIND OF HAZY"?
It was kind of interesting. It was recorded over a long period of time because Joe was always on tour with one person or another. We'd do some sessions whenever he was in town and then he'd perform his magic with overdubs and whatnot and the song would be a completely transformed evolved thing the next time I would hear it. I really enjoyed working with Joe. He's so talented and he would come up with really unexpected nuances that really added to the songs tremendously.
3. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO WRITING A SONG? DOES IT COME NATURALLY LIKE A FEELING OR IS IT MORE PLANNED OUT IN ADVANCE?
Usually it just kind of happens in one way or another. Sometimes I'll be messing around on my guitar and a melody will come to me. Sometimes I have a certain picture or story in mind but usually it's more about the feeling. Very of it's like an emotional snapshot, trying to capture a certain moment, a certain feeling.
4. WHAT IS A PERFECT DAY FOR SUKI EWERS?
Waking up lazily with the cats. Making music, taking photos, painting, spending time with friends. Dreaming all day long.
5. IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANY ARTIST, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Wow, that's a tough one. Burt Bacharach, Brian Eno, Brian Wilson, Radiohead, Air, Jason Pierce, Hope and Colm...
6. WHAT WAS THE BEST LIVE SHOW YOU HAVE EVER BEEN TO?
Hmm, best ever? I remember the Spiritualized show at Traxx(?) in NYC in '95 as being really amazing.
7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT?
Space. I haven't been there yet but I think I would really love it. All the stars without light pollution, and the floating weightlessness sounds really wonderful! I love the ocean, too. It's so vast. It's sad, really sad what's happening to this planet.
8. YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING ALOT OF SHOWS RECENTLY. HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN?
Very positive. Bands have been asking us to play shows with them after seeing us. People say they love the music and they love my voice and they love the sound and feel of it all.
9. WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORIE OF YOUR TIME IN MAZZY STAR?
Watching "Don't Look Back" in the back of the bus? Playing the Bridge School Benefit. Traveling through Europe. Being on the Jools Holland show with Johnny Cash.
10. IF YOU WERE ON A DESERT ISLAND WHAT 3 ALBUMS WOULD YOU WANT TO HAVE WITH YOU?
Can I take 4? Seriously it's difficult. Another Green World, Pet Sounds, Loveless, Satie's Gymnopedies. Which one would I leave behind?
